My boyfriend and I will be staying in the Hotel Amber which is situated 5 mins from the main square. I need to know if there are any pubs near by which will be showing the Liverpool FC match on 16th October. We land around 1pm and the match, so I’m told, will kick off an hour after this so somewhere close by would be even better! Personally I prefer the last one, great stuff and not so many stugs – quite rare in Krakow unfortunetly.

The Liverpool team were left unattended on the Tarmac upon touchdown at Barcelona airport yesterday, the authorities having initially mistaken their plane for that of a charter flight returning from a skiing package holiday. Once the oversight had been spotted, with the ground crews belatedly dispatched to end the awkward hiatus, the locals will have recognised the familiar foe in the travelling party’s midst with a shudder of apprehension.
Three times he brought his Valencia side to these parts and departed undefeated with the locals in uproar; Liverpool will be aiming to emulate that achievement tonight. The manager’s message yesterday was very much that, even with the karaoke fall-out rumbling on, his squad were ready to repair the reputations they tarnished at their training camp in Portugal against the holders tonight. They indicated to me that they would accept any internal disciplinary action.
We will do something, the players must be fined but they are focused on this match. That acceptance of guilt is understood to have been made at a team meeting in the immediate wake of the embarrassing events on the Algarve. The manager, rather pointedly, refused to be drawn on Bellamy’s long-term future at the club, though the Welshman is likely to have a part to play at some stage tonight with the visitors sure to play on the counter-attack against a team who have not lost at home in European competition for 13 matches.
The Premier League confirmed that they had approved the Argentinian’s registration last night, allowing him to complete his move from West Ham over three weeks since the transfer deadline passed. Liverpool will hope they receive the appropriate paperwork from the Football Association in time for the year-old to play his part here if required.

George Poland 21 September — 6 October was a Welsh professional footballer who played as a goalkeeper. During his career, he made over 50 appearances in the Football League during spells with Cardiff City and Wrexham and won two caps for Wales in His career was interrupted by the outbreak of World War II which began just after he was signed by First Division side Liverpool meaning he never played for the side.
During wartime, he also gained four international caps for Wales. Born in Penarth, Cardiff , Poland began his career playing as a forward with local amateur sides Cogan and Penarth Mission where his performances attracted the attention of Third Division South side Swindon Town who offered him a trial. Converted to playing as a winger by manager Ted Vizard , he impressed enough to sign for the club but failed to break into the first-team and left the club at the end of the —35 season without making an appearance.
Despite having conceded seven goals in a reserve fixture several days before, he was handed his professional debut on 11 January in a 2—1 defeat to Torquay United after replacing Jack Deighton in the starting line-up, becoming the third goalkeeper used by the club as they struggled at the bottom of the Third Division South. Following his debut, he played in six consecutive matches but did not return to the first-team until midway through the following season when he replaced Bill Fielding as first choice goalkeeper.
He played his first match on 15 March in a 3—1 victory over Ireland and his last match on 21 May in a 2—1 defeat to France. During the war years, he served in the Welsh Guards and appeared as a guest player in wartime fixtures for Brentford , Cardiff, Crystal Palace , Fulham and Leeds United and also earnt four wartime international caps for Wales.

In the second extract ‘Jan’ talks about how the Polish airmen who were resettled near Leicester tried to start a Polish community there.
His testimony is important because it shows us how hard it is to start up from scratch, and how closely people need to work together. The picture above is of a Polish war cemetery in Nottinghamshire. There are many places in Britain where the Polish contribution to the Second World War, as Allied troops, is commemorated. It is a very important history for the Polish community, and for British history too.
The inscription means ‘for freedom’ — the Polish forces fought ‘for our freedom and yours’. Poland almost immediately ended up in a new war with its eastern neighbour, successfully taking more land eastwards and populating it with Polish people. These post-World War I tensions sowed the seeds for future conflict. The dual invasion of Poland by Germany and the Soviet Union in September — with Germany invading from the west and Russia invading from the east soon afterwards — unleashed considerable population displacements within the country.
On the eastern side of Poland, Soviet forces targeted the families of army officers and people who were key to local administration, many of whom had only moved to the eastern part of the country in the s, culminating in mass deportations of over one million people to Siberia in and This amnesty led to the migration of civilians to Red Cross civilian camps throughout India, Africa and the Middle East and the creation of a new wing of the Polish armed forces, the Second Polish Corps.
The Corps supported the Allied forces, and many of its members fought in famous battles as Allied troops, including the Battle of Monte Cassino in Italy, and with the air force in the Battle of Britain.
