I appreciate the craftspersonship of the game, but I seem to find it ultimately forgettable. I also failed to appreciate the casualness of this grind. The daily and weekly challenges are exactly how casual mobile games games more interested in regular play than uninterrupted play keep a player coming back. Destiny is for the most part a casual shooter and it fulfils that role superbly. The subtly of how it does this is something I failed to really appreciate until I realised I was playing it for like 30 minutes a day, every day. There is also the obtuseness of its systems which I called out as quite annoying in my Notes. How the Light system works to get you from 20 to 30 is never explained well in the game. Neither is the fact that different colour shields are susceptible to different elemental weapons explained. Playing with friends in recent weeks have shown me more depth in both the moment-to-moment play and the overarching grind that I had not noticed for dozens of hours of play. This still annoys me, but I also think it is deliberate.

As a whole, Scourge of the Past lacks the epic scale of most other final bosses. Dropping into the Hellmouth for the first time, for example, is a terrifying experience. From there, a bridge-building exercise where one team member at a time crosses a gap as the rest of the team keeps the bridge intact has a fun action-movie feel to it. But the Leviathan also houses some highpoints in its halls. The four encounters at the heart of the raid, however, are a pretty strong lineup.
The stealth sequence in the pleasure garden can be frustrating, of course, as the royal beasts can be unpredictable foes for all the wrong reasons.

Now that Last Wish has been cleared, new content has been unlocked in the Dreaming City, Forsaken’s endgame destination: a new strike called The Corrupted is now available, and a new quest called The Courier can be picked up from Petra Venj, complete with a powerful gear drop. According to an in-game prompt which appeared when the raid was cleared, the final boss, Riven of a Thousand Voices, has more nefarious plans in store as well, so we’ll likely see more content unlock in the coming weeks.
